Baby Kisses

We have Noah on a reward system where he gets checks for good behavior and loses them when he misbehaves.  Whenever he gets a certain number of checks he gets a reward.  So this past week, Mike suggested that his next reward be a watch, since Noah always wants to wear one of Mike’s watches.   In the past, Noah’s favorite watch of Mike’s was his calculator watch, so Mike suggested that would be the type to buy him.  Noah responded by saying, “I was thinking something a little more ‘business casual’, from Macy’s or Men’s Macys."  I think we laughed so hard we almost started crying!

Amelia is always doing something new and her latest thing is giving herself kisses when she’s held up to the mirror.  

Noah is a great help with Amelia, when given the chance he loves to feed his sister a bottle.   

Since Amelia spends 95% of her waking time with me, I always like to let someone else hold her so the stranger anxiety doesn’t get too bad.  The picture below is of my good friend Gretchen’s daughter holding Amelia.  Ella has three younger siblings so she’s a natural!

This Friday, Noah’s kindergarten class is having a 100^th day of school celebration so Noah had to make something for the class that consists of 100 pieces.  He chose Legos, so we took 100 pieces and spelled his name. This is the kind of homework he really enjoys!

75 and Sunny... In January

 I love California!  This last week the weather has been amazing; I’ve had a hard time getting anything done because I want to be outside all the time. 

Once every few weeks I try and plan a date for Noah and me, so he can still get some one-on-one time with me without having to share with Amelia.  This past Saturday, I bought tickets to see a hip-hop group called Puremovement by Rennis Harris at Stanford; we had a wonderful time… it was hard to not get up and dance too!  It is so great to spend time with him, just the two of us.
 

While we were gone, Mike was making braised lamb with polenta for dinner.  The recipe was very time intensive, so when Amelia woke up he sat her in her car seat on the floor while he finished what he was doing; when he turned around, Amelia had crawled out of her car seat and was making her way to her OSV (over-stimulation vehicle).  Gone are the days of leaving her in one spot and expecting her to stay.

I think Amelia’s first tooth will make its appearance soon, at least I hope it does!  We can really tell how much her gums have been bothering her.  I’m always trying to offer her things to suck on to help relieve the pain, and one toy she really took to was a teething rattle.  She discovered that if she move her head back and forth while it’s in her mouth, it will make a squeaking noise, Mike was able to get it on video.

 Noah likes playing guitar for Amelia and she really seems to enjoy it (I think he enjoys practicing more when he has an audience!).

The Little Things

I wanted to take time to write about some of the things Amelia has been doing lately that I really love.  She changes so quickly, and I don’t want to forget each stage!  

When she lies on her tummy and she’s studying a toy, she taps her left foot on the ground in a rhythmic motion.  I think this is so cute because I’m a classic foot shaker, whether I’m reading or lying in bed… so maybe she inherited it from her mommy.

She loves studying faces and if she can get close enough to a face she’ll run her hands all around it, including mouths if you’d let her.   She has such an intense look on her face, like she’s trying to decide how people move their face to form expressions or lips to make words.

At her sixth month appointment, she weighed 17.5 lbs and was 25 inches long.  That is a 4.5 lbs gain from two months previous putting her in the 85^th percentile for weight.  She’s our little chunk!

When she wakes up in the morning or from a nap and we don’t have to rush off anywhere, we’ll bring her in our bed and she lays there with us close to an hour smiling, cooing and grabbing the face closest to her!  She especially loves when Noah comes in, her face lights up and she immediately reaches for him.  She’s one lucky girl to have such a sweet big brother. I know how important they can be in your life since I have two older brothers. I’m very thankful to have them!

A few weeks ago we noticed that she kept taking off one of her socks and holding while she sucked her thumb when she was tired.  So I went and got her a very soft blanket that has a bunny’s head and ears attached to it.  When we lay her down in her crib, we hand her the bunny blanket and she immediately starts sucking her thumb… it’s precious!

When she’s in her OSV (Over Stimulation Vehicle) she puts her hands out to get Lucy’s attention so Lucy will lick her hands.  There was a time right after Amelia was born when I was almost ready to give Lucy away because she was eating Amelia’s toys, going to the bathroom all over the place and just being a bad dog in general.   Now I wouldn’t dream of it, they have a very special relationship… we’re raising quite the pug lover!

Ever since Amelia was a newborn she has made a lot of interesting noises. While in Utah  in addition to cute cooing and babbling sounds, she started making a horrible growling noise that she thinks is funny. She smiles if someone else makes the noise back to her. Sometimes she growls so much that she makes herself cough!

Last but not least, Amelia crawled for the first time on January 12^th!  She hasn’t completely figured out that she can crawl, because if the object of her desire is more than a foot away she won’t try for it. However, if I keep scooting it back as she comes for it she’s able to go quite far!  

Each stage is so fun, I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Dinner Time

It is official, Amelia had her first meal!  She LOVED IT!  It was just rice cereal; I can’t imagine how she’s going to react when we give her real food.  When I’m feeding her, if I take a break and look away to say something to Mike or Noah, she grunts in frustration to get my attention.  Next week, we’re going to try pureed sweet potatoes!

Noah’s kindergarten class met this Saturday to ice skate together at a rink in Palo Alto, it was so fun to get to see a bunch of five and six year-olds try and ice skate!  I have to say, Noah did really well, but it was his fifth time going so he had an advantage.

Mike’s parents came up for a very quick trip to celebrate his birthday which is on January 17^th and to give Noah and us our Christmas presents from their side of the family.  It was so nice to see them.  Also, they brought us Lucy back, but since they left it seems like she is a little down… I think she really enjoys all the space and attention at their house.

Mike’s grandma Sandy makes amazing gifts and this year she made two of my all-time favorites.  My present was an apron, pot holders and a casserole carrier; she wrote a note to go along with the gift that talked about how her grandmother always wore an apron and how special it was to her.  The second present was to Amelia and it was redwork embroidery of a little girl with her handkerchief.  I am so excited to decorate Amelia’s room in Texas and hang it up!

Much to Report

It's been a while since my last blog because we went to Utah for Christmas this year, and I have to say how nice it was to have a “White Christmas”!  I think it must have been a record snowfall at my parents’ home in Park City: 3 feet in 24 hours!

My brother Jared, his wife Amie and their two kids (Kai and Aria) live in Salt Lake and my brother Jason, his wife Emilie (who’s 8 months pregnant) and their two-year-old son Parker were there as well . . . it’s a very rare thing to have all of us together.  We had a jam-packed two weeks; the best part was getting to see family and watching all the kids play together!  Noah and Kai have reached the ages where they have a great time playing with one another – I’m so excited for when Aria and Amelia are a bit older and can play together as well.

 We took the kids to the mall to get pictures with Santa, and I wanted to get Noah's hair cut before the photo, so we found a salon in the mall.  I told the hairdresser what I wanted, short on the sides and longer on top, I turned around to get Amelia in her Christmas dress and when I looked back at Noah she had buzzed his whole head!  I thought I was going to throw up I was so upset!

Santa brought Noah a Fender guitar and mini amp - Noah was so excited!  He said he isn't going to play Wii anymore... only practice guitar.  Mike and I are impressed because he has practiced for over an hour everyday!  Three days after Christmas he said to us, "I'm pretty much perfect and I've only been playing for four days!"

We were able to fit in a lot of outdoor activities that included: building a snowman, sledding, skiing and teaching Mike and Noah how to snowboard.  They both picked it up very fast, but I was especially pleased with how much Mike enjoyed it (he even agreed to go to Tahoe and try it later in the season)!

We also had fun family time walking around the Temple to see the lights, going to a bounce house with Jared and his family, making a gingerbread house and my dad even took Mike and Noah to fly the Apache simulator, which Mike had a blast doing!

This last year was one of the best of my life, and I am so thankful for my husband and two kids!

Enjoying Friends

We met our good friends, Megan and Carlo up in San Francisco and had a delicious dinner at an Italian place in the marina.  It was so nice to see them and catch up!  The following night we had friends over to our place.  Our friend, Steve, will be finishing his post-doc and leaving Stanford to go to Cambridge in February.  Noah was very excited to have him and his wife Caroline over to our house because they have British accents and they like Star Wars and Harry Potter. The first time Noah heard his accent he asked him why he talked funny!

We went to Mike’s lab’s annual holiday party at his professor’s house.  Noah has been looking forward to this night for weeks!  Professor Moerner has a robot that’s named Rosie that Noah loves. She’s controlled by a remote and she can even bring drinks!  Amelia wore a onesie I found in one of my favorite catalogs (Uncommon Goods) that  has a picture of a pink microscope that reads, “I Love, Love, Love my Microscope”, needless to say it was a big hit a the party since Mike’s lab builds microscopes.

Lucy LOVES Amelia!  Every time Amelia is in her OSV (Over Stimulation Vehicle) Lucy puts her front paws up so she’s at eye level with Amelia and gives her kisses.  She only does this when I’m not looking because as cute as it sounds, I’m not a fan of the dog licking the baby.

I have to get back to doing laundry, packing and getting ready for all of us to fly to Utah on Thursday, we'll be spending Christmas in Park City with my family.  One last picture to share, Noah feel asleep on the couch like this and before moving him to his bed I had to take a picture.

Making a List

Now that we know we’ll be moving to Texas this summer, we’re making a list of everything we want to do, see and eat before leaving the bay area and it’s a long list.  One of my favorite things about San Francisco is when they decorate for the holidays and put up the ice rink in Union Square. It really makes the city come alive!  We decided to take Noah up and go ice skating and eat at a breakfast place we’ve been wanting to try.  Noah and I had a blast ice skating but he’s going to have some serious bruises!

When choosing restaurants in San Francisco, I usually use Yelp.com as my guide to find out if it’s “Kid Friendly” (most are not).   When choosing the breakfast place we went to before ice skating, I made sure it said “Kid Friendly” but when we got there it was clear that my idea of “Kid Friendly” and their idea of “Kid Friendly” were not the same.  After waiting in line for outside for about 45 minutes, we were seated at a table where there was a GIANT photo of a topless model from the 1920’s.  Mike and I strategically placed Noah below the photo so he wouldn’t see it, we were tempted to take of photo of Noah sitting below it but knew it would probably cause him to turn around and look at it.

 

Amelia has started doing a few new things in the past week, one being when I hold her after coming home from the studio she tries to literally eat my face.  Sounds weird, I know, but it’s absolutely adorable and makes me feel special since so far she reserves it for her mommy.  Mike was able to capture it on video this morning.

Another new thing Amelia has started doing is diving for the food on our plates.  I guess this means it’s getting close to the time I should start her on rice cereal.  It’s a little sad for me because since she’s been born I’ve completely sustained her, which has been very special to me.  The other reason I’m holding out a little longer is because she is CHUBBY (and don’t get me wrong, it’s adorable) and until she’s able to move a little more on her own I think I should stick with breast milk.

 And lastly, she has started kicking her legs hard when she's lying on her back.  It truly amazes me how fast she changes, I wish I could freeze time!
